Morning Star readers and supporters in Kent kicked off their 2013 programme with an uproarious staging of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists in Faversham’s Arden Theatre on Saturday night.
Louise Townsend’s two-handed production starring Neil Gore and Richard Stone is a highly contemporary and witty staging of Robert Tressell’s classic working class novel of exploitation and resistance, and brought the audience to its feet.
“The noise of a packed and united auditorium, loudly booing capitalism and cheering for the working class, will resonate far beyond the confines of the theatre.” said show organiser David Nettleingham of the Kent Morning Star Readers and Supporters Group.
With a sold-out theatre, and forty more people having to be turned away, the show was a stunning success for the newly invigorated Kent group for Britain’s only working class daily newspaper.
Hand screened two colour posters illustrated and signed by Faversham cartoonist Andy Vine, were snapped up by the audience as they streamed into the night. Andy has been commissioned to illustrate Townsend Productions’ new 2013 touring show based on the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
